Do I need new wire from pole to service drop when I upgrade

curtis02023December 4, 2009

I am working on a house for a best friend. Need to know if it's neessary to have POCO run larger gage wire from pole to service drop. Is the answer usually yes or no? Will I have to re-run service drop too? What gage is the smallest I can get away with on both that is safe and functional?

This drop is owned, maintained and replaced by the POCO at THEIR discretion.

Why not call the POCO and tell them exactly what you are installing? Then they can make an informed decision on whether their existing wiring is adequate for whatever it is you are doing, and you'll know whether the total install is adequate.

Distribution wiring is not covered by the NEC.

The POCOs have their own set of standards.
