Doorbell transformer size/wiring

jtc001November 11, 2008

I want to add two chimes to my existing doorbell set up. I currently have two chimes that run off the existing system.

I'm assuming that I will have to replace the existing transformer. Can someone give me the output specs (voltage and amps) for a transformer that will run 4 basic chimes (by basic I mean the stand ding-dong types).

Will the wiring from the transformer to the connection point for everything need to be changed - i.e. will a larger transformer require heavier wiring to where everything intersects?

Thank you

I recommend 18 gauge wiring for chimes. Some installers use 24 gauge telephone cable. The chimes often sound very weak with 24 gauge. Some parallel the 24 gauge conductors for better performance. I have installed three chimes on a 30va transformer. Never have installed four on one control circuit. If the results are not good, search for an 18 volt transformer.
