Portable Generator hook up

puzzlefanOctober 16, 2011

I recently replaced my old generator with a new one. The old generator had a 3 pin 220 volt AC output which was connected to a 3 pin range/dryer type socket mounted in a garage which was wired to the main panel. The new generator has a 4 pin output. Can I wire the 4 pin output to connect to range/dryer type house connector? Do I use the neutral wire only or connect the ground wire to the neutral wire in the generator connecting cable?

You do NOT do it that way at all.
