Two connected(?) ceiling lights

JCChicagoSeptember 4, 2013

Dear all,

I am trying to install two chandeliers but am completely clueless about the wiring. I have 2 switches and 2 boxes, so I assumed each had its own switch. In one box, there are two terminals: white and red. So I connected these to the neutral and live wires of my chandelier and it worked fine. The other box, however, only had 1 white terminal, but I could see a white and red wire running through it further inside the box. I took a guess (I know...wrong move), stripped off the casing on the run-through red wire and connected my 2nd chandelier's live wire to it, the neutral from the chandelier to the white terminal. But now when I flip the 2nd switch on, chandelier 2 merely flickers, chandelier 1 lights up at lower intensity. When both switches are flipped on, only chandelier 1 lights up. I think the problem is how I connected the 2nd one, but I don't know how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Are you trying to use a 3-way switch for the two lights? What used to be connected to those ceiling boxes? I can't imagine anything that just had a single white wire. Can you show photos or draw diagrams?
