connecting old ceiling wires (5) to new chandelier wires (3)

knobertJune 22, 2010

We have a home built in 1947 and would like to replace the old chandelier. Problem...when we removed the old fixture there were 5 wires exposed from the box. One of the white wires and one of the black wires appear to come from the same source, and the remaining three (red, black, and white) appear to come from another source. The new six light chandelier only has three wires total; two black and one copper (ground). None of the instructions included with the new fixture show anything like we have uncovered. Any help would be appreciated. I have taken pictures of the exposed wires and would be happy to email to anyone who would be willing to help. MANY THANKS!

Just wire it up like the old fixture was.

The old chandelier only had two wires wired into the box and the new chandelier will wire into the same two wires. All the other wires are passing through and should not be messed with.

Carefully inspect the two black wires from the new chandelier to see if they are exactly the same. Any difference, (ridges or stripes) means that it will likely be the white wire.

Post the photos on here so that everyone can get a look at them.

Is this a 3-way light? ie, controlled from two separate light switches?
