Built-In Oven Electrical Rough In

monkeystomachJune 15, 2011

Hi Everyone,

I have a Bosch combo microwave/oven wall unit that I need advice on how to rough in.

All of the drywall in my kitchen is down but I'm not sure the best way to do this.

The cable is 6/3 NM and there is 6/3 armored cable coming from the oven.

Bosch's manual suggests installing the junction box in the cabinet above the oven's cavity. That's fine, I have the dimension and know where to place the box. However I do not know if I should just leave the cable in the wall and pull it through and install the j/b inside of the cabinet or if I should install the j/b to the stud before the drywall goes on.

What is the best way to do this?

Thanks,

Ed

Rough-in inspection requirements is very locale dependent. Only the total (final) installation is actually covered by the code. Around here, either would be acceptable. Usually we leave the NM for such appliances without the boxes that are installed AFTER the cabinets/drywall are in place.
