Any advice for choosing the best wood species, such as maple or alder, for painted kitchens cabinets?

Pricewise, poplar is just fine for painted cabinets, if you can find it. Birch/alder will be more money and maple prices are all over, depending on variety.

MDF is also ok for painted cabinet if budget is an issue.
