Removing primer?

CEFreemanSeptember 5, 2012

Hi all!

I've changed my mind on two cabinets that I'd primed.

They're maple with one coat of primer on the bare wood.

I was wondering if it'll damage the cabinets to use stripper on this thin layer, or if I were better off to lightly sand it off. The detail is what I'm worried about: they're beaded inset cabinets.

Thanks for your opinion.

Sanding can remove the crisp details. With sanding you also risk:
* sanding through veneer
* not removing the old finish completely, that will show up when you stain/finish.
* introducing gouges, divots, and scratches
* going through a lot of sandpaper and time.
* not getting finish out of internal corners, carved/machined details, or distressing

Yes, it's messy and maybe smelly. Suit up and get it over with in an hour or two instead of a weekend or two.

1) there is no veneer
2) there is no old finish
3) no gouges, divots or scratches -- yet.

That said, I'm no stranger to stripper and don't mind it. I had a fear it would hurt this new wood, whereas sanding carefully would not.

If that's not the case, OFF IT COMES!
When I stripped my 1st of 15 doors, it came off the detail far better than it came off the flat surfaces! So I'm not stressing that. Yeah!

I'll add this to my project list. Thanks.
