Treadle Sewing machine ideas

jdwill100August 13, 2007

I have an old Singer treadle sewing machine which the wood is pretty much gone. I'd like to remove the rest of the wood & the actual sewing machine and add a glass table top to it. Just for fun I would like to have the treadle to be able to operate some sort of kinectic machine underneath the glass. Any ideas on any kind of motion device I could add to this? Thank you for any response.

Take a look at this book, and others by the same author. It's a nineteen century mechanical engineer's field day. You should be able to put together any sort of Rube Goldberg you want from ideas here. They are things like converting rotary to linear motion, continuous to intermittent motion, rotational to eccentric, etc.

On my retirement list is to make a giant do-nothing machine by chaining a lot of these contraptions together.

Here is a link that might be useful: Making mechanical marvels from wood
