Please help me fix my door staining problem

jms1051August 10, 2008

I am staining red oak veneer, flat panel doors. I use a pre-stain sealant of Zinsser SealCoat with denatured alcohol. I let it set for 10 minutes and then apply the stain (Sherwinn Williams BAC). The dark stain has been pretty difficult to work with but that's a different issue. Some of the sealant dripped around to the other side of the door and when I stained that side, I ended up with a stripe along the edge where no stain was absorbed. It looks terrible. How can I fix it?

I tried some CitrusStip on a test piece of oak and it sort of removed some of the stain but the grain stayed dark. I suspect that there are additional pitfalls with stripping veneers.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

thanks in advance,

Jeanne

ooh, this is a toughie

a stripper is just about the only thing that'll get rid of that, id recomend using something whose active ingredient is methylene chloride. also ive never used the stain you mentioned but im willing to bet that unless denatured alchohol is specifically mentioned in the instructions youre using the wrong solvent (denatured alchohol is the vehicle that carries shellac, mineral spirits is generally the solvent in oil based stains). i dont know whether or not ive helped you, but its what i see immediately and what i can come up with off the top of the head
