Exterior Door Plans

osagejJuly 30, 2005

I would like to build an entry way exterior door.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

I've searched the net and came up empty.

In my spare I do woodcarving and build jewelry boxes.

I can make the door with cedar, pine, walnut, cherry, mahogany....etc.

Is plywood a requirement or can I laminated pieces together ?

I appreciate any and all comments. Thanks !

I haven't built one, but they're basically frame and panel constructions when they're solid wood. The corner joints are sometimes big mortise-and-tenons, sometimes just dowelled with really big dowels. The panels are sometimes set in grooves like a cabinet door, and sometimes set in a rabbet and held in place with a tacked-in molding, which of course makes the initial glue-up less frantic. I'm thinking of older doors I've seen and read about -- not sure how (or if) they address insulation issues these days. The old Fine Woodworking "On Joinery" book, probably available on ebay if it's not still in print, has a good article on this topic.
