Table Top - good enough for mosaic??

chinatreasuresOctober 12, 2009

I have a patio table that I want to mosaic. The top is 42" round and I believe it is fiberglass. The top is in real good condition, but not completely smooth, it does have some "graining" in it. Can I mosaic directly onto the top or should I add to or replace it? Also, there is a hole in the center (for an umbrella) that I will need to cover somehow.

This is a big project for me and I don't want it to last just a few years!!

ct- go th lowes and get some hardibacker board about 3/8" thick. lay your fiberglass on this and cut a new top to fit the old one. Then you can either lay your hardibacker one on top of the fiberglass one or use only the hardibacker one for a top. They also sell a tool by Cobalt that makes quick work of cutting the board. This stuff will hold up for you for years and is a joy to mosaic on.
Good luck.
