White vs Red Cedar Shingles/Siding

housebabyJuly 10, 2007

Does anyone know the difference between White Cedar and Red Cedar in terms of durability, color, sustainability? All I've ever heard of is Red, and the siding guy with the great price is suggesting a Canadian white cedar. I'm ok iwth it because it can be stained darker, but is there any other reason for concern?

White cedar will last just as long as WRC. The key to either is getting heartwood vs. sapwood. The heartwood is many times more durable. As shingles, either will be as good as the other, but the main drawback to using white cedar vs. WRC for siding is that long lengths are not readily available. Good luck on your project.
