Advice on refinishing side table

Karen99123June 11, 2011

Hi,

I bought this table, and it is a server table where the top is removable to carry food on. I am not sure what kind of wood the wicker looking wood is on the out side of the piece or the wood which it is attached to.

Is there a putty or wood filler that is stainable? There is shallow chunks of wood missing, and I will have to fill the areas. Can this piece be stripped and stained or should I paint it? I would love to refinish it, because I like the look of it.

Appreciate any suggestions or opinions!

Thanks

Karen

photos are small but, this looks like "photo finish" to me. In that case, I would assume it's mdf or particle board. You may be able to paint it but i doubt it is a candidate for stripping.

If you can rough up the surface enough without causing damage you can paint it. I've painted over photo finishes before but I don't like to.
