Large cubby project - Paint or assemble cabinets first?

jeffreyroppJune 3, 2013

I just finished my first bookshelf project using pocket hole joinery and a Kreg jig and found that painting the cabinets was very time consuming - especially so since I used oil base paint which takes forever to dry.

For my next project, I'm considering painting all of my pieces first once cut.

Good idea?

You can prime stuff before fabricating, and if you're careful not to paint anywhere glue needs to go, you could put on a first finish coat before assembly, which will help with interiors of casework, but it's going to need a final coat after hole-filling on your moldings.
