loose table apron

saypointApril 25, 2011

I have an extension table with wood top on which the apron keeps coming loose and sagging, mostly at the end of the apron sections where they meet when the table is closed. I have tried adding glue and toothpicks to the holes for the pocket screws, then adding glue between apron and top and screwing it back together with the apron propped up on a stack of books on a chair to press the whole thing together until the glue dries. It works loose after a while and sags again.

Any suggestions on what I can use to fill the holes? I can't use longer screws, but maybe fatter ones? Is glueing the apron the to top a good idea or not? Maybe I need to add some glued blocks underneath where apron meets top to reinforce?

Thanks for any help

Answers to this depend on the materials used in the table and how the thing was built. Pictures would help a lot.
