Provia door question

applexAugust 2, 2014

Just purchased a provia fiberglass door, all new construction of course. Question is this; we currently have 4" exterior moulding and the new brickmould is only 2" .
1)!What is normally done with that gap? Keep in mind our new door and brick mould will be cherry stain.
2) does our original door sill which is wood, stay? Its in good condition, the new door gets installed over the old sill?

The brickmold is probably a solid color or a stained cladding?

You can always trim it out with cedar 1x4s and stain them to match.

Remove the brick mold and install the desired trim you want. The sill may or may not have to be removed, I usually remove.

All 3 contractors said they leave the existing sill/ sill nose . They also said the old sill shouldnt get capped because walking on it can dent the aluminum capping?
Does that make sense?

Regarding the gap in the trim, the one contractor said its hard to match the new cherry brickmould; he usually caps the gap with whatever color the existing window trim is.

Sill nose and sill are different. You can cap the sill nose and it shouldn't show dents unless people are kicking it.

We usually use PVC and be done with tit.

The new pvc sill , i am assuming you mean an azek type product or pvc aluminum?
If either are used, they would still clash with the cherry colored trim and door, what is the " standard/ common" thing to do with the color at that point?

Adding cladding in a color to match the other window/door openings as your contractor suggested is pretty normal.
