Need advice - Cost to repair GFCI outlet in ktichen?

stretchadMarch 23, 2008

DH and i are in the process of buying a home and just had the inspection. One of the things that was found was that the GFCI outlet in the kitchen was not properly working. How much would it cost to have an electrician come in to do the repair?

should be 65 to 150 as long as it is just a failed gfci and not butchered wiring.

If you can change a receptacle or switch, you can replace a GFCI receptacle. Label the wires as they come off the old GFCI. There will probably be 5 wires: a black and white on the LINE side, with the black going to the brass colored screw and the white to the silver colored screw. You'll find the same setup on the LOAD side if the GFCI is protecting any other receptacles downstream. You'll also find a bare copper wire that goes to the GROUND screw, which is green. Don't forget to turn off the breaker for this cc't before starting. You'll save yourself between $55 and $140 off Spencer's prices.

Make sure to kill the power via the breaker to the outlet first...
