building shelves in closet

nap101March 7, 2013

I'm building wood shelves in the back of my closet. My closet is 38.5 inches wide and was planning on supporting it by screwing 1x4 boards in an U shape along the edges. I want it to be sturdy enough to support books.

The shelves will be 14 x 38.5 3/4 inch plywood.

Is 1x4 overkill? Will 1x2 do the same job?

1x2 will do the same job - the support is from the thin edge the shelf rests on, not the wide part of the board next to the wall.

The FRONT of those 14" shelves may need some reinforcing for books. Glue and screw a 1x2 on the front edge. flush with the top of the shelf.
