Weatherizing unfinished wood?

forensicmomMarch 14, 2011

I want to have my Sunday School students paint unfinished birdhouses but I want them to be able to stand up to the elements outside. I was hoping to let them paint with acrylic paints instead of exterior type paint since it's easier for them. Is there something clear I can paint over top of the acrylic that would seal it?

If not, what else should I do?

I'm not sure you could easily find anything that would go over the paint and would be suitable for outdoor use. Use exterior paint or use a weather resistant wood (redwood, western red cedar, cypress, etc.). The parents can tend decide to let it weather naturally or treat it in some way.

Plenty of exterior paints are acrylic. 100% acrylic enamel is what the label will read
