My lights are dimming!?!?

ShafferInVAFebruary 4, 2011

Good Evening,

I've got an electrical question that I'd like some help flushing out before I get the electrician involved. I always like to know the answer to the question before I ask the question!

A few years ago we added an addition to our house. At the time, the electrical service in the original portion of the house wasn't enough for the addition, so they added a second service from the pole and put a panel in the addition.

All of the sudden a few weeks ago, when high draw items (like the heat pump, garage door opener, etc.) turn on, the lights dim / flicker SIGNIFICANTLY (and then return to full power).

And I can't for the life of me figure out whats changed or why it's happening.

Could it be the service from the pole?

Around the time that it started, my wife said she heard a bang from out front (where the electrical pole is). She said nothing flickered at the time of the bang, but could something be wrong at the pole where our service is degraded.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

"Could it be the service from the pole? "

Yes.

As long as no lights are getting brighter it may be a bad splice on the feed to the house.

The first thing you should do is get the power company involved. They investigate flickering lights.
