Doorbell?

footwedgeFebruary 11, 2012

The old doorbell wired through the intercom system mounted in the back splash area was removed during the kitchen remodel. The instructions for the new doorbell state not to install the transformer in an attic location. Can someone tell me why?

If I can't mount in the attic, where can I mount it so I will have easy maintenance access in the future?

Did the transformer come with the doorbell?

No, the transformer was purchased separately. HD only had two choices and this chime required a 120vac input and 16vac output. It's a Heath/Zenith brand.

If the transformer is rated for installation in an attic and the attic is accessible I don't see why the doorbell manufacturer would tell you not to install it there.

I'm not aware of any code issues but I'm sure others will speak up if there are any!

Personally I'd mount it at the electrical panel - just because, if there is ever a problem with it, that would be the first place that I'd look.

My panel is recessed into the wall and a considerable distance from the chime location. Trying to avoid having to patch sheet rock. Thinking of surface mounting the jb and trans in the nearest closet

Or just get a wireless doorbell.
The instructions for the new doorbell state not to install the transformer in an attic location. Can someone tell me why?
It's probably not rated for the temperature of the attic.
Thinking of surface mounting the jb and trans in the nearest closet
That sounds good. Another option would be in a kitchen cabinet.
