3 way and regular switch in the same box

saltshakerFebruary 15, 2012

I am having trouble. I am trying to do the following:

I am working in the basement. I have a 14/2 wire coming into a 2 gang box. In the box is a 3 way switch which will lead to another 3 way switch (14/3 wiring) and then on to 3 lights. In the box is also a regular switch which will lead to a single light.

Is this possible for one wire to feed a 3 way and a regular switch? I just can't seem to get the lights to work. The breaker doesn't trip.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

The book "Wiring Simplified" will help you. This project is far beyond your present knowledge and experience.

Hello Saltshaker

There are a few ways you can wire this but here is one drawing I made of what I think you are trying to do. You can just add a pigtial wire from the 3 way switch into the POWER Wire. The Ground Wire is NOT shown in the drawing.

Hope this helps

Let us know how you made out with your wiring project

Bus Driver,

Thank you for your advice. I respectfully disagree with you. I have everything hooked up correctly. Somewhere there is a wire or something loose.

Linesman, thank you. This is exactly how I have it hooked up. I must have a wire loose somewhere. But thank you for your diagram. It is great!

Linesman, that was VERY nice of you to draw that up.

No, salt, my suggestion was good. The drawing that was posted here, or a variation of it, is what you would have found in the book. I do not have a program for doing the drawing online, so suggesting the book was a way of getting the same information for you. Plus the book in hand is not dependent on the willingness and ability of others to post the needed diagram for you. The book is available at your schedule.
