Longevity of melamine for walk-in closet cabinets?

scorpionleatherFebruary 27, 2013

My cabinet maker is building the custom wardrobe closet, drawers, and shelves from white 3/4" MDF melamine, which he recommended as the best material.

I hardly had time to research this before; and now I am a little worried reading some discussions about melamine delaminating and eventually having to be replaced. But then some other people say it is a great closet material also for high-end closets.

What kind of durability and longevity should I expect from the melamine walk-in closet structures? If it develops scratches or delaminates, are there paints available to match exactly so that I can essentially make this last the lifetime of the house?

What is the melamine on?

Melamine is just the surface layer.

3/4" MDF. Cabinet maker said this is much better than particle board.
