mail box

anneinva_2009August 6, 2012

Hi I am planning on making a mosaic mailbox on an aluminum mailbox. I think thinset applied directly to it for adhesive. Do I need to prepare the surface in anyway? I will use sanded grout and sealer. I would appreciate Any tips on making a mailbox. Thanks.

Ive never done a mailbox, but have worked on metal. I applied fiberglass mesh wall tape then a skimcoat of thinset to it and mosaiced on that. applying thinset directly to metal-without some sort of way for it to grip seems risky to me. Now someone else may have done it and it was fine, but I just didnt feel like it would stick.
The wall repair tape I used was cheap, easily available in rolls, and it was tacky so it stuck down. The other work I have done directly on metal I used silicone adhesive which sticks to the metal with no problems.
