inserts versus sash kits

aejamisonApril 24, 2010

I considering replacing some of my old windows. I've been looking at the Zap kit from Jeld-Wen. It seems to me if the existing window frame is square, then these kits install faster and give more glass space than a pocket insert. Am I missing something? Is there an advantage to pocket insert replacements versus the sash kits? Thanks.

Sash kits are more subject to air leakage and are more sensitive to proper installation.

Sash kits also use older technology (vinyl jambs etc.) You will generally get a nicer window with the insert. The drawback as you said in your post is you lose glass area but the post by wow is right on. Good luck!
