Bedroom window size

tanner27March 2, 2011

We're building a new home for our acreage (no neighbors) and just deciding on window sizes. I'm wondering for the three kids bedrooms that are approximately 10'x10', the designer has the rooms alotted to have one window each that is 32.5" wide and 60" tall. Is that a normal size for a bedroom? I keep thinking its awfully long and narrow and not sure what the benefit would be, as well it would limit how we can rearrange furniture. Any thoughts?

Depending on the style of the house most double hung, 2nd floor windows range between 32" and 36" in width and between 54" and 62" in height

The other issue to be careful of is minimum size for egress as per the building code. They have certain size opening requirements for bedrooms. Second floor bedroom windows must meet the following: 20 inch minimum opening width, 24 inch minimum opening height, 5.7 sq ft net clear opening and the max sill height from the floor is 44 inches. This is the National Building Code which I do believe has been adopted by all of the states as of now.

I think i might change them to be 48" tall and 60" wide, then i have more room for furniture underneath, and we're doing 9' ceilings so it shouldn't look too big

What type of windows? Dbl Hung? Casement? Slider? Do not forget what I mentioned above.
