found a plain frame at the dumpster at my kids' school and have finally decided what to do with it.

I'm building a box frame around it and glued up a piece to make a topper

here's my tesserae decisions

and this is what I have done... I'm still considering doors

Before I got to the last picture, I KNEW it was gonna be an icon-shaped piece. Great design - I LOVE it, and that's also some very good carpentry, l'il girl. You'll have me checking this forum a lot more often to watch this piece. This is gonna be fuuuuuuuuuuuun. BTW - I LOVE the colors of your wall, and what's that hanging upper left? It has a hangy-down thing which, you know, I love too.

Slow, thats my mosaic frypan by Seaglassic. It has oyster shell as a dangly!

I'm envisioning something similar to Laurel Skye's mirrors with an iconic Laurie Mika kinda thing... Lots of color and whimsey

LOL I struggle so bad with the carpentry, no matter how well I think I've measured... and warped boards... I had to do some serious sanding to get it all matched up. I'm giving up all hope of matering our scroll saw though, no matter how hard I try, I just can't use it. I cut the top out with the hand held jigsaw - that I can control.

Personally, I like it either way! Whatever you decide will work out perfectly and be another NT masterpiece, I'm Sure! Definitely looking forward to seeing this develop...I was raised around tools, too! Dad always wanted a boy, but got 2 girls, so he taught both of us how to fend for ourselves around the garage. Lucky for me and my sis, too....both married wonderful guys who can cook up a storm, but don't do so well with tools....LOL!

Great job on making those doors! I like it either way. It will speak (or not) to you as you go and then you can decide about them. I'm envious of you girls and your tool know-how. I am learning as I go and it takes me 3 times as long to do something, but I'm getting there.

still working on making the tesserae but heres the treatment I did on the doors. Since I need to keep the doors light I planned to paint them but I wanted something more... a texture. So using Mika's book example, I spread mastic out on the doors and drew in it (and wrote in it)... I'll spray these gold

Somehow I KNEW you'd put that wire behind the cutouts! Super brilliant. LOVE your designs in mastic. On the raised ones on the pictures I sent you, I watched the artists in Damascus making one of my pieces, and he had made the designs in chalk, and w/a little pointed stick dropped the cement mixture onto the designs, and then painted in gold. He said there were five elements in the cement mixture, but he wouldn't give me the recipe. I've eyed the stuff at HobLob for raised texture, but it's too expensive. When you say mastic, what do you mean? I've thought of using drywall compound, but don't think my hands w/be steady enough to use a cake decorator to write. Tell us more about your technique. This is so beautiful, and I'm so anxious to see this progress.

I thought about drywall mud but it can dent and scratch. Mika shows doing this to her substrates though I don't know why cause she then covers it all up??? I troweled on a skim coat of tile mastic and used a paint brush handle to draw in it. That unfortunately leaves burrs sooo I waited till it dried and sanded those off.

I really like it

Whatever he used dropped easily from his little stick and set up almost immediately and was smooth. When I was painting w/oils, my artist friend used glue to raise her flowers w/a little texture in her paintings. There must be something .....?? Well, NT - I'm pretty speechless here. You must be pretty proud of this piece of junk from the junkpile! I've gotta say that I like this even better than any Laurel has made. She uses very expensive stuff, and you've done this on a strict budget. I have no words in my vocab to describe my admiration for this piece. This w/bring lots of money. Doncha sorta wish you could keep it? I know when I sell something, I always think I can make myself another one, but never do, cuz I don't like making two of the same thing. This IS your best piece. Are there any juried art shows in your area. You need to start entering those, because your talent cries for recognition in wide areas. You're multi-talented, and you need to be marketing your work for pay, but first, you need some awards. This w/win in a heartbeat. PLEASE seek some art shows and enter.

OMG!...I never even saw any of this, till right now, with the update.
this was all being done, while I was away from the computer, all side-tracked with getting the kids' house all ready for their arrival from Ireland...
they got here the 4th of August..man, that's been a fast 3 months..
can't remember if I posted an update but they're expecting a boy the first part of January.

the mirror is absolutely stunning and in all the colors I love, love, love.
and I'm so distressed that I can't be near that auction, just to feel the excitement that's going to be going on, for the sale...
you are right up there, top drawer, with the finest of galleries, to introduce the art of mosaic at it's most profound beauty..
and don't be shy to accept that.

you've grown from just an idea of what to do as a first project to THIS!!!
I just may need to google search your newspaper listing....

Wow, it looks great and I bet it'll do great in the auction. Very cool that your item was featured that way. You deserve to be proud for such a great mirror.
