Double hung or casement?

cookingrvcFebruary 19, 2010

We are planning an addition to our home and want to have long windows along the long wall. We understand that the casement operating mechanism might be questionable with a large window and was looking for your opinion on which is best and anything I should be aware of.

We're meeting with the contractor tomorrow to go over the different options/cost.

There will be transoms above the windows too to help give us the look we like. I linked to a picture that shows the look we're going for.

First question: are you using vinyl, fiberglass or wood?
Casements give you more ventilation than either double hungs or awnings (which is another option with a fixed window above.
If wood is an option, Marvin has a new casement with a max size of 42" x 92" or 36" x 96" fully operable.
Generally double hungs are less expensive than casements as well but performance isn't quite as high if those are considerations. Hope this helps since no one else responded.
