Transoms?

alyciarandalJanuary 30, 2013

We are trying to decide if we want to put the transom windows on the bottom floor, like drawn in the picture, or if we just put in regular windows without the transoms.
Problem is 1) the expense. 2) The transoms are drawn at 8" and they would have to be minimum 10", which would cut more into the actual window below it.

HELP! What would you do? Pros and cons of transom windows? Other options?

Thanks SO much!

Eliminate the transoms, go with taller casements for certain in my opinion.

I went through the exact same exercise. I did not like the added cost and reduced glass area. Instead went with a cottage grill for the same look.

Don't like the look of small transoms. It accomplishes the exact opposite and will create a busy look.

Go with the grid option if you want that look as pictured above.

Do not want to hijack the thread but I have a related question.

What about that transom OP has over the door?

We have 5-0 x 6-8 French doors (full view glass) with a 12" transom above them. We are replacing the entire unit. Should we (and, more importantly) can we go with taller doors instead?

We have brick siding around the door (similar to the picture above), so I do not want to change the opening.

TIA!

These are 8' doors with no grill. I guess it depends on the rough opening.

You can order most doors in custom heights now.

That is what I would do personally.

Which companies would make custom size doors?

I wanted to look into Marvin Integrity but was told they didn't do custom size in All Ultrex.
