Under cabinet lighting for high cabinets?

thegratefulgardenerMay 13, 2013

Hi all,

I have a new kitchen with high cabinets over a large, granite peninsula. I need some lighting under the cabinets, but they're not high enough for pendants, and regular under-cabinet lighting would be visible. I'd love to go with LED strips, but I'm afraid it would glare. The peninsula is between the kitchen and diningroom, and the bottom of these cabinets is visible from both of those rooms and even the livingroom.

Any ideas?

OK, so here's a crazy idea.
How 'bout using LEDs up against the bottom of the cab perimiters and covering the entire cab bottom with frosted glass.
This may require a deeper light rail. but I think it would give you the light you need and still look nice from beneath.
Or check out the link I've attached below.

It may not be inexpensive, but it looks like they may have an answer.

Here is a link that might be useful: Phantom Lighting

Thanks, willtv! Great idea. We were kicking around the idea of putting some kind of trim to hide the strips, but just couldn't picture it. I think the glass would diffuse the light a bit too, softening it. Were you thinking actual glass or some kind of panel that looks like glass?

A quick glance at the Phantom Lighting site looks like they're hiding lights on cabinet tops, inside cabinets, and down low, but I didn't see anything like what we're after. I'll spend some more time checking them out, though. We still need in-cabinet lights in the diningroom.

I was thinking of real glass.
You could try some type of frosted Lucite but my experience has been that, over time, plastic tends to yellow or craze.
As far as Phantom Lighting goes, try calling them to explain your problem. They may be able to create a custom solution.
