Can you iron 'fake leather' (vinyl)?

Alice JohannenOctober 22, 2005

Hoping someone here has the answer to this Very Serious Conundrum.

See, I ordered my son a pirate costume from Lillian Vernon and it's great (cheap, pre-made, therefore great because I have No Time) -- BUT, the tri-cornered hat that comes with the costume is really bent up and wrinkled. Is there any way at all to get it to smooth out? Steamer? Iron (on the fabric-y side)?

Any advice at all would be most appreciated. Thank you!

try using a presscloth and ironing with a cool iron or try steaming and shaping.

I sure wouldn't put an iron on the 'right' side of the vinyl. Make a form to put inside, maybe of bendable cardboard, to fit as closely to shape as possible. Then put it in the sun, if you have any, or near a heat source, like a furnace or radiator.

How disappointing!

Maybe try your hairdryer...control heat by holding it at a distance, then closer, etc.

Thanks, alinehuey, Red Confetti and grittymitts! I may have to try all three to see what works best. Poor DS is desperate for the hat to look right, so I sure hope I can make it so. Thank you!

Just thought I'd let you know the hair dryer worked. I had to untack the brim because it was tacked all wrong, so about 1/2 hour of blow-drying plus some new stitching, and it looks great! Thank you!
