Small attic space for storage

klugfamilyDecember 16, 2009

I am looking for storage options and thought that the attic space above one of my extra bedrooms may work nicely for seasonal items. I was thinking of laying down some plywood and some cheap carpet. The house is over 30 years old, and the insulation you see in the pictures is most likely original. Any input on replacing the insulation?

In the pictures you will notice an old antennae that needs to be removed, as well as a whole house fan that will stay in place.

Any input on the best way to get it prepped for storage, adding insulation, dealing with the duct work, and quality attic pull-down ladders is greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays

Dave

You've got a lot of badly installed wiring to correct but the important issue is the strength of the attic joists. What size and span? How much storage?

I wouldn't use carpet up there for many reasons. You can get vinyl sheet good remnants at a decent price. Easier to clean and lets you slide heavier items around rather than wrestling with them.

How will you get the plywood up there? It would need to be about 1/2 in. Well nailed down & then lay vinyl over it.
