1/2 hp Craftsman Garage Door Opener

btgriffiDecember 26, 2009

I have a model 13953650 caraftsman garage door opener and it will not close. When I hit the button on the wall it will only travel about 1 foot down and then return to fully open. I have checked the sensor alignment and that does not appear to be the problem. Both sensors have lights on and only go off when I wave my hand in front of them. I have checked the door for binding by closing it manually. It travels smooth. I have even left the door unattached while operating the opener and it still has the same symptom. Is there something else I can test or is the board shot?

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Check to make sure those small lights on the sensors are not flickering ever so slightly. If the main light doesn't flash then you should try increasing the down force slightly. It is on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. If that doesn't do the trick there is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor called an RPM sensor board. This is what senses the door stopping when it meets an obstruction and when it goes bad it will create the problem you have. Should be available at any good door service company.
