Craftsman Garage Door Opener Not Closing

lookupseebluNovember 30, 2011

I have a garage door opener that the gear became stripped on. I replaced the gear but now the garage door will not close. It travels about 4-6 inches, stops, and reverses. If the door is disconnected from the rail, it travels just fine all the way down. As soon as I connect the door, it travels up fine, then the behavior is repeated - down 4-6 inches, reverse back. Travel distances are fine, nothing is obstructing the door, door sensors are solid green.

If anyone can give some guidance, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

Kevin

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

Thanks again for your help. Unfortunately that is not the issue. I did not change out the worm gear as it was not worn at all and was in fine shape. Because of this, I did not actually have to remove the motor.

I find it odd that it runs course just fine without the door, but once the door is on the track, it only goes 6 inches, stops & returns.

Thanks for any help.

Try increasing the down force just a bit. It is a control on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go.
