sewing denim purses

foxylil_ohJuly 10, 2007

This is my first posting and I really need help. I am trying to make my first denim purse and I keep breaking the needle when I try to sew over the seam of the jeans. Does anyone else have this problem? I have sewed since I was young and in 4-H and I have never had so many broken needles. TIA......Di

When I have to sew over blue jean seams I give them a few good whacks with a hammer first. ( I use a bread board on the floor so I'm not hammering on my sewing table. Hope this helps!

When I sew denim I give it a good shot of steam from the iron and then whack it with the hammer. Also are you using a heavy needle like 16? There is a little gadget called a "jean-a-m-gig" or a "hump jumper" that allows you to sew over bulky things like denim.

Hope this helps

Thanks both of you for the info. I am dangerous with a hammer but I will give it a try and also try the heavier needle. Who would of thought of whacking the fabric. Can't wait to give it a try.....Di
