On the hunt for a new sewing machine

hobby_libbyJune 19, 2014

I need a sewing machine that can handle high speeds. Hubby sews like a bat out of hell on our Singer Serenade 30 (6235).
I need the machine to occasionally sew through canvas or denim, max 4 layers (seams).
I wanted electronic, as in no bells and whistles.
Until I got a demonstration on a computerized Baby Lock (Tempo) at a Sew & Vac today.
I love the idea of not having to switch out the needle plate!
I love the automatic needle threader!
I love the one-step button hole!
I love the different embroidery stitches!
I don't know how much I'll use them as we've been just straight and different zigzags people to date.
A seamstress cousin has & recommends a Janome (Magnolia).
The Baby Lock sales rep said no nearby Janome sales/repair/general maintenance people exist. I'd have to drive halfway across the state for such.
A Viking/Husqvarna sales rep said their machines have metal interior or movements, but I wrote their company & I was told they have nylon gears.
Singer customer service said their's also have nylon gears, that they outlast the metal gears of the past, & the Baby Lock rep agreed.
So, I'm asking for your recommendations, to add to my confusion of what machine to get. lol
Thanks! :-)

My husband suggests we get an older real heavy duty straight/zigzag stitch machine just for the thick heavy fabrics, and a nice machine for lightweight to maybe medium weight fabrics.

Actually, on second thought, Bernina or Husqvarna-Viking?

Joann Fabrics and Crafts has H-V on sale right now & I'm considering the Emerald 118.
