Adding organza sleeves to sleeveless dress

shinyredthingsJune 1, 2011

Hi sewing people. I need a little assistance - I'm hoping to add sleeves to a sleeveless wedding dress, using silk organza. They will be fitted sleeves, and come to just below the elbow. Should I cut them on the straight grain or on the bias? And how much extra fabric should I add onto my upper arm measurement to make sure they are fitted but don't tear? With thanks.

organza will be less likely to tear if you use French seams. As for "fitted but not too tight" the wearer's comfort will be the determining factor.

I see a drawback with your project, though. Sleeveless dresses aren't just dresses without sleeves. The Shoulder area is actually cut narrower than a style that has sleeves.

Good luck with your project!

I agree with eva, the shoulder area is cut narrower on a sleeveless dress.

You may want to consider making a shrug or bolero from the organza instead.

As far as cutting the sleeves, I would do this on the straight grain, as you don't want them to stretch out of shape, especially if you are using genuine silk organza.
