light weight sewing machine wanted still

tropical_thoughtMarch 20, 2013

I gave up on the i sew cute, it did work but there was something missing that held the bobbin in place. I bought it on ebay in a box, but with that missing part, I can't use it. I noticed there is brother on amazon, that weight 13 pounds and the light weight Jem weights 16 pounds.

So over all I want to know what is most lightweight that is still a real machine and not one of those that is like a toy. The i sew cute is ok, but it just too small over all. I want something to take things like sewing classes and circles. I have a pain in my shoulders that gets stressed out, if I have to lug something heavy and stairs are often involved so wheeled carriers don't solve the problem.

If the brother is lighter at 13 that sounds good, but got some bad reviews on amazon, so it would better to go with 15 to 16 pounds then to get another turkey of a machine because it only weights 11 pounds.

I have a Brother CS6000i. I was looking for a light weight machine to take to classes. I got it from Overstock for less than $200,I think, but it looks like you can get it from Amazon, WalMart, and other vendors.

It is wonderful! My main machine is a Brother, so the feet are interchangeable. It sews very well and does many decorative stitches.

It doesn't have a knee lifter (I am a quilter so use that a lot on my main machine) or a thread cutter, but it does have a built in needle threader.

The Jem gold 600 cost twice what the brother does, but they said the brother has a foot petal that can't be controlled and the bobbin has a problem with loopy jams so you have to use this special trick to fix that which you can read about on amazon reviews.

That's interesting...I've never had any issues with my Brother CS1000. I wonder what they mean about the foot pedal? Mine works just like any other machine. The Brother machines come with a manual start/stop switch that you can use instead of the foot pedal, but if the pedal is plugged in the button won't work. There's also a button to slow down the speed of the machine if you want to.

I have the brother SE 400. That is the sewing/embroidery machine. It has been a workhorse in my sewing business. I recently bought the very basic Brother that sells for about $75 at Wal~Mart. I highly recommend it, too. I think it will do almost anything a home sewer would need. Can't beat the price!

I love my Janome 4618, it had a handle and a cover that makes it good to go but is hefty enough for almost anything. A singer featherweight usually goes for about 200 on ebay if you want a vintage machine. People swear by them. I don't have one.

I have 2 featherweights. I love them both. It's pretty lightweight and mine sew like tanks.
