New GAS Furnace Options

jflake10February 2, 2011

I have three bids to replace an old Singer furnace [40+ years]

1. Carrier 3-t air Con 16 seer with 90% furnace $5285

2 Carrier 3-tAir Con 13 seer with 81% furnace $4075.

2nd bidder with a one unit proposal.

1York 95& furnace with a 14.4 Seer 3T Air unit @ $5500

All three to take out the old unit, install new, enlarged Air Return grill, new program thermo. 10 year warranty

I believe my choice is between 1 & 3

I live in a 2800 sf ranch with 16" of roof insulation, brick with about 65000 sf of windows/doors

Other half of house is heated with a 3T HPump/AirCon 14.5EER unit

If you have not already used the energy home improvement tax credit, there are still some tax credits available for hvac replacements. If you can use it, then verify that your system will qualify. You should ask the dealer for the AHRI # of the system matchup, and then verify that on the AHRI website.

Also, often some utilities offer particular credits or rate reductions for systems that meet particular efficiencies. So you may want to check with your gas and electric companies about that, and again make sure what you get will apply.

It is the efficiency of the matchup of the outdoor unit, indoor unit, and coil that gives the overall system efficiency and AHRI number. Also some furnaces and coils have their own matchups.

For more info see the heating and ac forums.
