Ceiling paddle fan repair

ionized_gwFebruary 11, 2013

When the fan is switched on the motor hums, but it does not turn. Is it worth fixing or should I just go and buy a new one? I've never worked on ceiling fans before. I don't know if it might be the motor itself or I might get away with a capacitor.

It is an Emerson CF529W

It looks like this one but the model number is slightly different

Replace it.
Scrape the copper.

If you like the fan, I'd try replacing the capacitor. (If it looks half-melted, that's probably the problem)
Finding the correct capacitor, though, might take a bit of research. They're not universal.

And often come as a block of multiple values for different fan speeds.

Thanks for responding. fortunately, I have the "installation Instructionns and Renewal Parts Identifications", dated 1980. There is a "capacitor" @ 4 mfd/340V and a "Capacitor, Speed Control". I'll betcha that the latter costs more.

Is a motor likely damaged from being powered on but not started for an extended period?

4 mfd sounds like a run capacitor, not a start capacitor.

The guy's are right: Junk it, these fans are really cheap to replace.
