craftsman garage door operner

stan1164January 3, 2010

I have an older sears craftsman 1/2 horsepower garage door opener. It is chain driven. The motor will run but the gear that moves the chain won't turn. It may be time to buy a new one? I'm not sure what is wrong? Any advice would be appreciated.

Stan I think we had the same problem, I'll ask DH when he comes in from plowing.

Remove the cover of the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and is most likely stripped. It is available at any good opener service company and comes with instructions.

Don took the words right out of my mouth! Hope you can fix it, it'll save you the expense of a whole new opener.
Let us know how it works out.
