kitchen counter color/texture question

sharonm45September 18, 2010

We are remodeling our kitchen -- light green glass subway tile, white (or antique white, not sure) cabinets, light maple floor. We are stuck on countertops. I have seen pictures where green subway tile is next to a darker gray granite and I really like how that looks, but I have cold feet.

Should I go for a gray granite, or maybe something with a matte finish instead? Our backsplash is glass and our appliances are stainless, so I'm worried about too much shine. If concrete weren't so expensive and high maintenance, I'd be tempted, but it's not in the budget. Thoughts? Please?

Don't worry about it. Go for what you like. I'm sure it will look absolutely gorgeous.

you might go to the benjamin moore paint website and do some sample rooms using different colors. (using one color for BS, one for cabinets, one for counters) this might give you a feel for how they look together.

I think you'll need to be careful with how dark the countertop will be. Right now you have a lot of light color choices. If the gray is dark, you'll notice it the most when you walk into the room. Not saying that is a bad thing, but just something to keep in mind when you're making the decision. If it were me, I'd stay lighter.

But dark countertops look gorgeous with white cabinets, really classic. I'm not saying light counters don't look good, but the contrast between white and dark is lovely.

Go to the kitchen forum, lots of ideas. If you don't like shiny countertops, have the granite honed.
