remodeling in NYC

rhnycAugust 22, 2011

Hi Everyone,

I apologize in advance as I'm sure its been asked a thousand times....

I'm planning on renovating my condo in NYC.

Here's what I'm planning so far:

1) Redoing the floors throughout the apartment (living area, bedrooms, kitchen)

2) re-tiling the mastering bath and replacing the Vanity and faucet fixtures

3) Replacing the cabinets and appliances in the kitchen

I don't think any of the work I'm planning requires any plumbing or electrical work.

So the question is, do I need any permits?

Yes, you will need some plumbing and electrical work for your remodel. You cannot do a kitchen or bath without that, even if it's just disconnecting the sink and dishwasher. And because you are in a multi-family dwelling, all work on your condo will need to be performed by licensed and insured professionals. You will also need approval from your condo association for the flooring installed, as well as any other changes that will require work on a common wall. Often, getting approval from them will be more difficult than obtaining the needed permits from the city.
