Deep eaves vs. sun?

michael_in_chicagoAugust 10, 2010

The house we're purchasing to remodel has deep eaves - about 3' (1 m) directly above the top of the windows (its a one story house). It's summer now and given the angle of the sun, not much light comes directly in the house, which we want. These windows face south.

I'm assuming as winter comes and the sun sinks further in the southern horizon that we'll get more sun inside the house, but maybe not. We're trying to figure out if we'll need skylights or not. Can anyone comment on this idea? Thanks!

We live 5 blocks from the Chicago border, and our eaves are 28" deep. Our south facing windows are awesome for natural light during late fall thru the winter. Our house is a 91 yr old bungalow with separated rooms and a door to the second floor/attic so no light gets to the main floor from above. We have plenty of main floor natural light on all sides except north. Our neighbors on both sides are about 14 ft away.

If you are gutting a bungalow and adding a dormer on the second floor, go ahead and add skylights because the attic could use it. However, the main floor will be fine without them.
