Height of Ceiling

cindidaveAugust 29, 2011

We are in the middle of remodeling our kitchen and living room, by opening up the existing wall between the 2 rooms and creating an open living area.

Our house has 3 levels. The bottom level has lower than 8 feet ceiling. The top level is a master suite with 9 ft ceiling. The main level has two bedrooms and a bath as well as the previously mentioned kitchen and living room. The house is about a 2,700 square feet.

We designed the kitchen so that it kept the original 8 foot ceiling. However we pitched the living room (also on an 8 foot plate line). Now that it has started to get framed, i am realizing that the pictures of all the kitchens i love are 9 feet and higher. So in isolation, I love the kitchens with the higher ceiling. Should I increase the height of just the kitchen to 9 ft or would it seem out of proportion of the rest of the house. The living room is attached but would be separated by a hanging fir beam.
