insulation question

ferroplasm Zone 7bJuly 8, 2013

Not sure where else to post this.

I have these bays between the joists in my laundry room. See picture below.

IYou can actually see the exterior brick if you get up there and look down.

Do these bays need to be insulated? Would rigid foam on the bottom and exterior portion caulked into place do the job or just shove some fiberglass batts up there?

that one inch opening goes all the way down
between brick & wall.

spray foam would be easiest fastest option.
you'd spray the opening in pic two.
you might could seal with foam board..very carefully
caulking it to air seal.
packing fg batts only slows air movement..doesn't stop
it.

are you asking about inslating joist bays?
or just air sealing gap behind brick @ tops of
walls?

what's above? conditioned space?
is this a basement?
what is that uninsulated duct?

best of luck.

Master bedroom is above. This room, the laundry, is the lowest level of a split level. It is conditioned space as well. It is not below grade. The uninsulated duct is one of two ducts for the bedroom.

Air sealing is a good idea but for insulation it would help to know the climate.
