Hardie board exterior, expanding covered porch

pdsgatorJune 10, 2012

I am remodeling a house. The exterior is hardie board. We are adding sq ft for a family room and expand outdoor living space. It is all covered. My question is do you think we have to match the exterior hardie board to the new covered patio walls (inside walls) can I go with another product. If another product, suggestions. When I asked my gc he thought I was crazy for not using one uniform product but I thought using the hardie board will make an outside feel, when I am trying to make the outdoor space an extension of the inside. I would appreciate suggestions.

Do you have to? No, it's your house and you can do what you want.

Personally, I don't think anything screams "I'm an addition!" quite like a change in siding. If you want to make it look like this was always a part of the house and not an add-on, consistent siding goes a long way.
