Replacing Kitchen Cabinets w/o Disturbing Tile Floor

mmhuebelApril 14, 2013

In the next few months, I hope to begin remodeling my kitchen - no plumbing or electrical moves because the layout is pretty good, but new cabinets, countertops, etc. Here's the potential problem: when we moved into this house 17 yrs ago, we replaced the ugliest vinyl floor ever with ceramic tile. We tiled under the dishwasher, stove and refrigerator, but not the base cabinets. I do not want to lose this tile. It is in the kitchen, the breakfast area and by the back door to the house - all connected. Is it going to be possible to remove the existing base cabinets without damaging the tile?

Another item to check is whether the base dimensions on the new cabs are the same as the old. Ours weren't. The new cabinets have a smaller footprint which left a gap between the flooring and the cabs. Our old cabinets were from 1971, so if yours are enough newer, you may not have any problem.

Any custom cabinet maker can make it work, but if you go with cheap stock cabinets, you might have problems.

Didn't you buy extra tiles in case of breakage?

Most likely you will damage the tile that was installed up against the base cabinets. Hopefully you have a few extra tiles to fill in that area if they do indeed break

I had thought of the footprint - the house was built in 1983, so it may be an issue. Thanks for reminding me!

We did buy extra tiles, but we were on an extremely tight budget at the time, so I know we don't have a lot. I'll have to count before we begin. I just wanted to see if it was even possible to do this, before having to come up with Plan B!
