Granite on Split Level Kitchen Island
Hi, first post here but long time reader. I'm designing a kitchen island and I've been unable to find any information on something. I'm planning on doing a split level top, lower for prep and upper for bar type seating. I'm planning on going with something like granite/quartz/soapstone for a counter top and I'm wondering what is typically done to support the upper counter? ie, if I want the top to extend 12" past the back edge of the cabinets, what do I need under it to do that? I was thinking of putting a series of small drawers and cubby holes that would be 6" tall and X" deep which would sit on the back of the cabinets, but not sure how deep they should be to support the top? Or should I be thinking 4x4 posts to the ground with Corbels? And if that's the best way, how many do you need per foot length of counter typically?
I hope this is making sense. I'm at a loss as to how to design a split level right now.
